1 - The Sun's rays. Colour lighting gel pieces cut with a scalpel and Sellotaped onto 330 x 270 mm clear animation cell. This was used as a layer over a full frame piece of lighting gel for back lighting.
2 - Foreground mask. Rotring pen tracing on 330 x 270 mm clear animation cell and painted on the back. This was used as a layer over the first back lit exposure run of the sky and the rays to allow further back lit exposure runs for Arthur, flowers and bees. 3 - Sun (1S). Clear circle in solid black. Rotring pen tracing on 330 x 270 mm clear animation cell and painted on the back. This was used with a colour lighting gel and masked around with black card for a second back lit exposure run to burn a bright sun over the sky and sun rays exposure. 4 - Sun (2S). Larger clear circle in solid black. Rotring pen tracing on 330 x 270 mm clear animation cell and painted on the back. This was used with a colour lighting gel and masked around with black card for a third back lit exposure run with the camera soft focussed (or with a cell under the lens with Vaseline on it) to burn a soft glow around the sun over the sky and sun rays exposures. 5 - Photolith text strip. "IT'S A NICE DAY" as clear letters in solid black and Sellotaped onto 330 x 270 mm clear animation cell. This was used with a colour lighting gel and masked around with black card for a fourth back lit camera exposure run. 6 - Rotring pen drawing by Rod Lord on 330 x 270 mm clear animation cell of Arthur Dent, flowers and bees. This was used to contact expose onto photolith film (as yet not found) for clear lines in solid black for a fifth and final back lit exposure run. 7 - The camera "dope sheet" covering this section of animation. |
