Bit of a random mix in this box - here's a drawing and dope sheets from the end of episode 6 and a preparatory layout sketch of the "Boxer" from the Dolphins in episode 3.

End of Episode 6 - "Wonderful World"

Episode 3 - Boxer

Hi All,

Hi All,

I know there is still an auction yet to complete but over the weekend I came across the partner drawing for the one that's currently in progress. So I thought it made sense to add this one now -

the other Vogon character drawing - pencil on tracing paper

I also came across the photolith which resulted from both of these so I will add that tomorrow as well. I haven't found the black on clear version but may stumble across that eventually.

Best wishes to all.

cheers,

Rod

Hi All,

First auction finished recently and I've hastily extracted the next thing in the box that I thought might be of interest.

A Vogon character drawing - pencil on tracing paper

As nobody complained about the 20 quid starting price I have kept it for this one too. But please feel free to tell me if anyone feels this unreasonable and I will reconsider.

I will try to dig out another couple of items over the weekend.

Best wishes to all.

cheers,

Rod

043   06 Feb 2015

Hi All,

Sorry I didn't manage to get my act together to actually re-start in January.

So far my time doesn't seem to be as plentiful as I expected it to be, but here is a first item to get the ball rolling again.

A layout and character key of two Vogons

You will notice that unlike in the past I have set a starting price. I have done this because sometimes it was not really worth the time and effort of doing it. But if the general feeling is that this is too high then please shout and I will reconsider.

In the meantime I will plod my way through the old artwork boxes and pull out anything that looks as if it might be of interest.

Best wishes to all.

cheers,

Rod

Hi All,

Once again it's been a ridiculously long gap in communications. It's 2 years now since my last grovelling apology in December 2012 ... and once again - I'm really sorry !

I'm not going to start itemising the excuses as this is a time of year to be festive and jolly  !

I'm now an OAP and do not expect to get much more commercial work, let alone stressful stuff that requires working weekends and long hours. Really I don't expect to be getting any at all !

So I fully expect to have much more time availabe to pursue various other interests, one of which of course is finally getting on with sorting through the remaining artwork boxes. So before the end of January I fully expect to be posting items on eBay once again.

I will of course let you know as soon as anything is available

This is H2G2 mailing number 42 ... perhaps that's a good omen ? Let's hope so !

I wish you all a Happy Christmas and very best wishes for 2015.

cheers,

Rod

Hi All,

It's been a long gap - I'm really sorry !

I notice from my records that it is actually just over 15 months since my last mailing and I didn't even wish you all a Happy Christmas a year ago.

Unforgivable !

My abject apologies. I seem to have been completely bogged down all that time trying to get back into the black after a pretty disastrous couple of years. Our only break has been 3 days on Alderney earlier this year.

I am now just finishing off the last bits of a web site and might be starting another oil animation project in January. The oil job may not happen at all, but even if it does I should have a bit of a gap after the New Year that I aim to use to dig a bit further through the next artwork box in the pile.

I will of course let you know as soon as anything is available.

I wish you all a Happy Christmas and very best wishes for 2013.

cheers,

Rod

Hello Everyone,

It's quite difficult to decide how best to create sensible packages or collections from the Belcerebon bits and pieces. In the end I've decided to list individual items to allow people to either have the chance to acquire a single individual item or choose more than one to collect.

Hello All

I'm very aware that all these mails could get very irritating for some but I know that there are at least a few who do want to know when items are listed. I update the details on the H2G2 page on the web site whenever I send out a mailing -

H2G2

So if you would prefer to just check that when you feel like it rather than getting all these mails then please let me know and I'll take you off the list and stop bothering you.

I've now added 2 packages for "So this is it, we're going to die !"

I've split them in two to allow more opportunity for different people to acquire pieces if they want.

AW_030 - Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy

AW_031 - Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy

There is still another active listing -

AW_029 - Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy

Hello All

Thank you once again to all of you who have been bidding and congratulations to those with winning bids.

I am working my way through the Episode 6 sequence trying to collect logically related items into small packages and have listed the first 2 of these on eBay -

AW_027 - Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy

AW_028 - Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy

In an earlier mailing I mentioned that someone had pointed out that T-shirts using the Babel Fish image were being offered on eBay. When I contacted the seller he apologised and very responsibly temporarily removed the item. We have since come to a non-exclusive agreement. In case anyone is interested the item is now again being offered here -

Babel Fish T-shirt on eBay

I can't say I'm particularly enamoured with what's been done with the overall image but the main content has not been adulterated.

A member of this mailing list who produces embroidered T-shirts, polo shirts, etc, also contacted me about the possibility of using images from the H2G2 graphics and we have also come to a non-exclusive agreement. The first of these is being offered here -

Embroidered items

You will need to click on the items under "New Arrivals".

027   22 July 2011

Hi All

Many thanks to all who have and are bidding on items.

I have just come across an almost entirely complete sequence from episode 6. This is the sequence that starts after Arthur says "So this is it, we're going to die". The animation starts with Ford Prefect's theory on a strange human behavioural pattern and goes through the Belcerebons of Kakrafoon Kappa.

I have started by listing the storyboard on eBay -

AW_026 - Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy

There are still 5 other items active -

AW_021 - Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy

AW_022 - Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy

AW_023 - Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy

AW_024 - Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy

AW_025 - Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy

Rod

026   20 July 2011

Hi All

I've put a few more bits of artwork on eBay.

The first 3 of these are of Arthur Dent.

I've split the second 2 off from the first package to allow a few more people to get single items if they want to -

AW_021 - Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy

AW_022 - Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy

AW_023 - Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy

The next 2 are the DON'T PANIC ! camera artwork, split into 2 items for the same reason -

AW_024 - Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy

AW_025 - Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy

There's a Zaphod Beeblebrox item still active :

AW_020 - Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy

Hello again

There is now another listing on eBay -

AW_020 - Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy

3 items of Zaphod - a layout drawing, a tracing on animation cell, and a photolith from the tracing which was used as artwork under the rostrum camera.

There is currently still another active listing of Alterian Dollar items :

AW_019 - Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy

Hi All

Thank you to all those who have been bidding and for the interest and kind comments I've received.

There is now another item on eBay -

AW_019 - Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy

These are pieces that where involved in the creation of artwork for the Alterian Dollar animation sequence.

If memory serves I think this was in Episode 5.

The package consists of one item of final artwork and some pieces that were used in earlier steps.

All the best

I'm trying to keep this process chugging along so there's another item on eBay -

Hi All

I got a bit carried away on the last mail with enthusiasm and personal stuff about my weekend.

Perhaps I need to curb that sort of thing because as a result I had my very first request from someone to be removed from the mailing list !

So in future I'll keep it simple ...

There's another item on eBay -

AW_017 - Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy

All the best

Rod

021   10 July 2011

Hello All

Hope you've all had as good a weekend as I have !

Yesterday our kids organised a picnic in Windsor Great Park for our Ruby wedding anniversary. Spent quite a bit of the time playing cricket with them and the grandsons. Granddaughter is still a bit too young but I don't think it'll be very long before she's swinging a bat.

Today has been spent helping to set up and clear up after our local Community Association annual Food, Wine and Ales Fair. Also did my bit to help keep a local brewery in business.

It's been a long day but before going to watch a movie I've grabbed a bit of time to post another item on eBay -

AW_016 - Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy

All the best

Rod

020   08 July 2011

Hello again

I had a message via my web site today pointing out that someone was selling T-shirts on eBay using the Babel Fish image. Many thanks to that gentleman !

I have now been in touch with the company concerned who are very apologetic and have removed the listing until such time as an agreement is in place for a royalty percentage on sales.

I don't know if anyone would be interested in these but I will send a link once the item is listed again with a proper agreement in place.

Today I've posted another item on eBay -

AW_015 - Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy

Best wishes

Rod

019   05 July 2011

Hi All

Thanks to those who came back to me with feedback about the bits and pieces. As a result I will keep stuff that falls into this category to one side and revisit it when everything else has gone.

Trying to maintain the momentum I've posted another item on eBay -

H2G2_ AW_014 : Babel Fish Sequence (early design)

Best wishes

Rod

018   04 July 2011

Hello everyone.

Once again I need to apologise for the very long gap in communications. Really sorry but things have been a bit tough and concentration has been focussed on survival. I'm sure I'm not alone in this !

But I'm finally back on the case and have been tackling the first box of old artwork again. As a start I've posted 3 more items on eBay -

H2G2_ AW_011 : Babel Fish Sequence (early design)

H2G2_ AW_012 : Babel Fish Sequence (early design)

H2G2_ AW_013 : Babel Fish Sequence (early design)

I'll do my best to keep up the effort but a bit of feedback would be useful. It's difficult to decide what might actually be of interest to people - for instance, is there any point offering bits of text that were used under the camera as part of a sequence ?

Most of you must be well aware that the animation was made using multiple camera passes so that no individual frame can be assembled as a single piece of artwork except in the form that they are offered as prints on my web site which are scans from 35mm multi-exposed film taken at the time.

This means that an awful lot of the artwork in these boxes is a collection of bits and pieces that were used separately for various exposure runs under the camera. Apart from the key layout drawings (when I can find them) nothing is a complete image in its own right worthy of being stuck in a frame, and most of it was used for back-lighting so is just a piece of black film with clear bits in it.

Are these bits and pieces of any interest at all or should I just junk them ?

Look forward to hearing some opinions on this as I don't want to just bin stuff if someone somewhere might have liked to get hold of it.

Cheers to all - and will hopefully be in touch again soon.

Hello All

I'm very aware that I've been seriously neglecting you and it's now been nearly a whole year since the last mailing. My apologies.

It's been a very difficult time and all my concentration has had to be focussed on mere survival. This has been in serious doubt from time to time but I'm still hanging in there ... if only by the fingernails on the edge of the cliff top !

Excuses aside - I promise to try much harder to sort out more H2G2 material and make it available as soon as possible. I will apply myself with more rigour to the pile of boxes !

I wish you all a very Happy Christmas and all the very best for 2011 -

Finally I've been able to find a bit of time to get my head round putting stuff up on eBay.

The first item was posted yesterday. Details are as follows :

Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Babel Fish
A3 print from TV series graphics artwork.

This A3 print of "Babel.05" (#028) was used as part of the display on a stand at Hitchcon 09 at the Festival Hall. It is being offered for auction because it must now be described as "very slightly exhibition soiled". The imperfection amounts to 2 small slightly disrupted areas of the back surface of the print where Velcro stickers used to mount the print on the display panels were removed afterwards. Although this is minimal and not visible on the front surface of the print I don't feel I can honourably supply it in response to a full price regular print order.

The print is on 0.27mm thick Premium Glossy Gallery Quality Photo Paper, already carries its number (#028), and has been embossed with the authenticating Pearce Studios Ltd seal stamp. This is the first of a small group of various prints that were used on the stand which will also be offered for auction over the coming weeks.

The other prints mentioned in the description that will be added soon are :

Petun.02
Panic.red1
Panic.mau1
Pandim.1
Magra.03
Dolph.02
Deepth.1
Babel.03

I also have a few postcard sized prints left from Hitchcon 09 that I will also add shortly as collections, and I am about to start searching through the boxes of artwork to see if I can find any original artwork that may be of interest.

I will let you know whenever something is added.

Very Best wishes to you all,

Rod

Sorry it's been so long but I've been rather bogged down with doing a web site (abiinsoll.co.uk) and also a project for deep sea oil and gas extraction in the Gulf of Mexico. The first of these had a deadline of yesterday and the other is on-going.

At long last I've finally managed to make the smaller 7x5 prints available from the web site and also added the possibility of making payment via PayPal.

I haven't yet had a chance to dig out any more original artwork to put on eBay but I will be doing the first of those shortly and will let you know.

As I think I said before I still have a few A3 prints that were used on the display at Hitchcon 2009 which have been slightly "exhibition soiled" by loosing a bit of the back paper surface when removing the velcro stickers. I will put those up on eBay soon and will let you know about that when they're up there.

As Christmas and New Year are approaching fast I wish you all Seasonal Greetings but I hope to be able to do that nearer the time when I send another mail.

Very Best wishes to you all,

Rod

Hello All.

You are receiving this either because you added your details to a mailing list on the stand I had at Hitchcon 09 on Sunday or because you have contacted me in the past expressing an interest.

If you've changed your mind and would prefer not to receive mailings please reply to that effect and I will remove you from the list.

I would like to thank you all for visiting the stand and also a "thank you" to those of you who bought prints. I have never done anything like that before and I only had a lead time of 3 days to prepare so I hope it didn't all seem rather too makeshift !

Another thank you to those who returned for the auction which because the main events were running late did not actually take place till just after 6 pm. My apologies to those who agreed to wait till the delayed time. There were several bidders and the winning bid was £45.

I've actually already had a couple of mails asking how long it will be before I add original artwork items to eBay. I do intend to do this as soon as I can get myself sorted out. But I'm afraid I have rather a long list of priorities stacking up at the moment at the top of which is a storyboard for which the client is currently waiting patiently.

Hitchcon was rather a last minute desperate interruption to all that stuff so I have some serious catching up to do before I get to sorting out eBay etc. But I will definitely be distributing information that will contain detailed descriptions, pictures, and search references etc whenever I add an item to eBay.

Please be a little patient - I will certainly get there before too long but unfortunately I have to keep on trying to make a living !

I had a lot of questions about the nature of the "original artwork". Many find it hard to grasp the notion that there never existed any single assembly of artwork that represents a complete frame from the animation. It was in fact compiled by making multiple exposure passes under the rostrum camera so that any scene might have had as many as 12 or more exposures of various elements that contributed to the final complete frame. That is why the original artwork consists of individual separate elements that were only a part of the final shot.

The item that was being auctioned at Hitchcon was the original Rotring tracing on celluloid made from a pencil drawing of Arthur at the point of being ejected from the Vogon airlock. The reason it was so large was that the shot began as a close-up on Arthur's eyes and the scale was governed by how close the rostrum camera could get to the back lighting glass. The tracing was contacted onto Lith film to achieve a clear line on black. This was then back lit with a colour gel and the camera moved away a fraction per frame and the image rotated manually by a fraction per frame. A similar representation of Ford was then treated in similar fashion as a separate exposure run.

As there seems to be quite a lot of interest in the technicalities of production I am considering adding an illustrated section to the web site that describes the process we used in detail. Of course those that have the double BBC DVD will have already seen Kevin Davies' excellent section on this in his "The Making Of ..."

It was the first time I have done 7" x 5" prints and as they seemed to be quite popular I also intend to add them as an option for ordering prints on the web site. Again, it will take me a little time but I will let you know when they're up there.

Some of the prints I had up on the display board ended up as slightly "exhibition soiled" because when peeling off the Velcro stickers from the back a bit of the rear surface peeled away. As I can no longer offer these at full price I will be adding these to eBay as well eventually in an attempt to recoup a little of the rather excessive printing costs involved. One or two of you might also be interested in the 2 A3 sheets on the display that showed the complete selection of images currently available. I'll stick those on as well on the off chance.

I have had a bit of criticism in the recent past as some visitors to the web site would have liked to be able to pay for their orders immediately online rather than having to send a cheque or do an online banking transfer. In fact I have actually lost a couple of orders which were cancelled for that reason. So as part of the updating of the site I intend to change the system to go through Paypal rather than the existing rather clunky method. This will require a complete redesign of the Hitch-Hiker section so will take a while to fit in between other stuff. Will let you know.

Finally ... 3 visitors to the stand at Hitchcon were kind enough to tell me that they were in the graphics business and that it was the animated graphics in the TV series that inspired them to make their career choices. I am very touched by that notion and another "thank you" to you three for your kind words. It certainly adds a considerable significance to the whole thing that we could never have possibly imagined at the time. I hope none of you have any regrets !

I've rambled on much more than I intended to so another apology for that and I really must dash now to get on with that storyboard that's waiting. I'll only mail again when I have any more info.

All the best, and thanks again.

Rod
